A week in the wild that changed how I see growth

The Self-Led Dispatch

Hey, it’s Matt.

I just got back from hiking the West Coast Trail with Nancy — seven days of mud, ladders, storms, and a few powerful moments that reminded me what real presence looks like.

It wasn’t just a hike. It was a mirror.

Every day tested something different: patience when the tide trapped us 100 meters from camp, focus when crossing slick moss-covered logs, and consistency when the only option was to keep moving forward.

It taught me a lot about leadership — not the loud kind, but the kind that’s quiet, steady, and built from within.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re pushing too hard or rushing through the hard parts of life, this story might hit home.

It works… right up until the moment your relationship, your team, or your sense of self starts slipping through the cracks. This week, I’ve been writing about what happens when men stop confusing control with leadership. True strength isn’t about dominance — it’s about presence. It’s built when...

The Self-Led Dispatch He didn’t need a speech. He needed presence. That moment taught me what real strength is. Ever notice how easy it is to perform strength instead of living it? For years, I thought being a man meant keeping it all together — work hard, provide, stay in control. But the truth is, strength without clarity is just noise. In my latest piece, I share a moment with my son that reminded me what presence really means — and why clarity always beats control. If you’ve ever felt...

Real strength isn’t about control. It’s the calm in the chaos—the space between reaction and response.

The Self-Led Dispatch How to lead yourself calmly when everything around you speeds up. Hello Reader When life speeds up, most men push harder. But real strength doesn’t come from force — it comes from presence. The ability to pause long enough to respond with clarity instead of habit. Read it here → Real Strength = Presence In this week’s reflection, I share a story from my time under pressure — how one breath, one sentence, and one moment of stillness changed everything. If you’ve been...
